Unusual and amusing photograph from Russia, ca. 1980s, showing a tamed bear playing an accordion.  The bear, seated and in a leather muzzle, appears to be playing in a public square and is accompanied by an unidentified man and woman.  Minor wear along the edges and corners, some spotting to verso; overall fine.  7.25 x 4.5 inches (18.4 x 11.4 cm.).

Photograph taken following her return from Mexico

Original photograph of the Cuban ballerina taken immediately after disembarking a Cubana de Aviacion airplane.  A typed caption to verso, translated from the Spanish, reads "Alicia Alonso arrives at the Rancho Boyeros airport after the triumph of the Ballet Cubano in Mexico," and a handwritten label dates the photograph to May 1968.  Alonso can be seen just to right of center, laden with bouquets.  Wear to edges, surface crease to left margin, crease to lower right corner, else in fine condition.  10 x 7 inches (25.4 x 17.8 cm.).

Collection of Early American Tintypes

A collection of 23 small tintype portrait photographs, dating from ca. 1860-1880 and housed in a blue cloth-covered box. The portraits depict adults and children, apparently of various social classes; most are individual portraits, with two photographs of pairs. Several are duplicates or close duplicates. 16 of the tintypes are mounted in identical small pink card frames. One larger tintype, a three-quarter-length portrait of a man, is unmounted. Also included is one small later photograph, clipped to size. Light wear and scratches, some foxing and creases to the mounts; overall in very good condition. Each tintype ca. 1 x 1.5 inches (2.5 x 3.5 cm); mounts 1.75 x 2.5 inches (4.2 x 6.6 cm); larger tintype 2.5 x 3.25 inches (6 x 8.5 cm). In a blue cloth-covered cosmetic box with snap closure, with the logo of cosmetic company Palmer and their product name Gardenglo stamped in gold inside the lid. An uncommon AMQS from the American avant-garde composer, pianist, author, and inventor who co-patented a 'Secret Communications System' with actress Hedy Lamarr in 1941. AMQS on an off-white card imprinted "Collection of Bernard J. Klug." Antheil pens two bars from one of his works, signing below in bold ink, "October 29, 1954, George Antheil." In fine condition. 5 x 3 inches (12.7 x 7.6 cm).

"Russian Pianist to stay in Britain" - Original 1963 Photograph

Original press photograph of the great Russian pianist looking happy with his wife, Þórunn (Dody) Jóhannsdóttir.  Original press caption reads: "25-year-old Vladimir Ashkenazy, the Russian concert pianist, has been granted permission to remain in Britain with his wife and baby son." The Ashkenazys left the USSR after many struggles with the authorities over permission to travel and remained in England for several years before moving to Iceland in 1968. In fine condition. 20.5 x 25 cm.
